Last night I had a deadline for two pieces, one for a children's book publisher and another was an editorial for the British mag ARENA Magazine. I was really happy with the way they both turned out which has been kind of uncommon lately considering I'm always in a rush to finish things due to tight deadlines. You can see a slight variation between my book style and editorial style as I favor linework in one and less in the other. Two dfferent styles, one guy. POLAR opposites....
This was a piece for an article about how the US spends billions of
dollars planning on war machines that can outperform even their most
technologically advanced machines of today to the point where the
machines won't even need people to operate them on the warfield. It's primarily red which is such an eyecatching color which can convey a certain seriousness and tension.
This is a sneak peek of the graphic novel I've been writing/illustrating for Scholastic for the past few years called "The Domesticated Six" (working title). This year I'm going to be massaging this baby into a completed book and hopefully get it on the shelves soon. My editor and I have been very patient in getting the story down just right. It's a story about superhero housepets, family, and second chances. For those of you interested I'll be starting up a blog about the production later on this year.
About eight years ago one of my old roommates went on a cruise thinking he was going to meet a lot of single women, but as it turned out the cruise was filled with large Christian families and alas, no single women. In any case, I did this piece in honor of his trip. Sadly, there was no smoke coming out of the ship as I imagined in my mind.
I recently illustrated an article about the troubles with newly developed apartment housing that is being built on top of open air shopping mall areas as the wave of the future in housing. The biggest problem is parking and how residents can often find their spots being swiped by businesses and customers who are too frustrated to find any other parking spaces in an already conjested lot.
I know this one is a little late for Illustration Friday. This past weekend I attended the memorial service for the father of some old family friends that I've known all my life. It was the first funeral service I've ever been to, but as the monk said, as time goes on this becomes a normal part of life.
In any case, we had a moment of silence and I drew a quick (20 minute) piece of a monk in honor of their father for this Illustration Friday.
No one told Darby that his dreams of dressing up the bear at the local zoo and making him his pet was a 'SAFE' idea....But then again, Darby was kind of an asshole.
This was a quickie (20 min) piece I whipped up for Illustration Friday. I thought I'd try playing with a more graphic style. Gotta continue experimenting you know.
Have a great Labor Day folks! I'm takin' the family to the Long Beach Aquarium!
I'm never sure where I want to post my illustrations for Illustration Friday but I figure I should start doing so on my actual website because there are other cool things here that I think you would all get a kick out of. In any case, this is my piece for today's topic which is, of course, "run". I did this just before the 2004 L.A.Marathon depicting people and their methods of self motivation to get through such a grueling event. If you ask me, the only reason why I'd run for 26 miles is because a bear is chasing me and wants to eat my face off.
Ah it's Friday...

Hello "Doodlevision" viewers and welcome to my new website! Feel free to check things out and tell me what you think. I'll be posting my Illustratoin Friday illustrations here from now on in their own section. "Doodlevision" will still be around but it'll feature more of my non-Illustration Friday work so if you bookmarked it, you're tags are still good.
So I continued with the red umbrella theme this week and I went with shopping...Why? because my wife LOVES all the SPRING SALES. I made this into a calendar so for any of you who are interested you can save this image to your desktops for your own enjoyment.
Also, if any of you are interested in free screensavers, I've made a few available for you to upload HERE. I made these about four years ago and I found them while cleaning out my hard drive.
In the mean time, don't forget to turn your clocks back this weekend.
Seacrest out.
